The Illicit Cannabis Market vs. the Legal Cannabis Market – What We Can Learn

April 16, 2019

It is well-known that the regulated cannabis industry directly competes with a well-established illicit market, and eliminating the latter is central to Health Canada’s cannabis objectives. Unfortunately, since legalization, provincial distributors of recreational cannabis report a deficiency of cannabis from Health Canada licenced sources that genuinely limits the regulated market. In November, the government of Alberta instituted a surprise freeze on issuance of new cannabis store licences, and other provincial governments have limited the operating hours of their own stores due to lack of supply. At the same time, reports trickle from the unregulated market that availability of illicit cannabis is unaffected by new competition from the legal market. The unregulated market has an … [Read more...] about The Illicit Cannabis Market vs. the Legal Cannabis Market – What We Can Learn

The Ontario Budget and the Future of Ontario Cannabis Retail

April 12, 2019

On Thursday, April 11th, 2019, Ontario Minister of Finance Vic Fedeli presented the 2019/20 provincial budget where it offered insights into the future of Ontario cannabis retail. The budget is quick to point the finger at the federal government, stating that the federal government had “[chose] to throw open the doors to cannabis legalization without first taking into account the reliability and sustainability of the national cannabis supply.” Ontario has offset the blame for the limited amount of retail stores onto the Federal government, with the justification that the cap on retail stores was necessary to address the supply shortage issue. Although this caused much frustration in regions where access to a retail outlet would be few and far between, the model was justified when … [Read more...] about The Ontario Budget and the Future of Ontario Cannabis Retail

APPLICATION OF GMP IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY

March 29, 2019

ABSTRACT Many European Union (EU) countries have legalized or decriminalized the medical use of cannabis to some degree. The advent of broad acceptance of medical cannabis as public opinion shifts in the EU is driving the need for the cannabis industry to implement strict regulatory controls on the production of cannabis products. There is therefore a shift to implementation of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) in the cannabis space, most notably in Canada, where medical cannabis production has been legal since 2001 but regulated to a lesser extent than the GMP standard. Due to the lack of regulatory harmonization in the US, this shift to GMP standards for production is expected to impact the US market when medical cannabis laws become regulated federally. The interfaces of medical … [Read more...] about APPLICATION OF GMP IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY

Challenges for International Licensing

March 29, 2019

The business of cannabis in the global environment is on the rise and expanding rapidly and multi-dimensionally. The growing cannabis industry has high economic potential and offers exciting and lucrative opportunities for countries and entrepreneurs. The door is opened, the show is on. What’s next? As for any new industry, this growth phase brings many challenges for players at all levels. Many challenges stem from the very limited experience entrepreneurs, established companies and government authorities have in the regulated cannabis space. Canadian regulators and businesses are ahead of the game due to country wide legalization of cannabis on October 17, 2018, and we can apply that knowledge to the rest of the world. One of the Governments’ goals is to stimulate economic growth … [Read more...] about Challenges for International Licensing

Why Cannabis Cares about Mycotoxins

March 13, 2019

A spotlight was shone on mycotoxins in the early ‘60’s after the death of over 100,000 turkeys on an English poultry farm. The culprit was a toxin produced by a common fungus called Aspergillus flavus which had contaminated peanut meal fed to the turkeys. This brought increased scrutiny to a vast array of agricultural products, with mycotoxins found in many - corn, wheat, peanuts, barley, rye, cottonseed, sugar cane and beets and hard cheeses. So far there has been one public instance of a cannabis (drug) product being impacted by mycotoxins, and there could be more if companies do not seek to understand, prevent and control the cannabis when used as an ingredient. What are Mycotoxins? Defining mycotoxins with just a few words is tough but in brief, they are small molecules produced … [Read more...] about Why Cannabis Cares about Mycotoxins
