Health Canada Licence Regulation Updates - May 14, 2019

May 14, 2019

For New Applicants Health Canada will no longer process applications made through CTLS without a fully built facility and a site evidence package that meets the new requirements. This site evidence package must be submitted within 10 business days of submission of the application in CTLS. The Confirmation of Readiness (COR) notifications from Health Canada which were previously provided to applicants will no longer trigger the submission of a site evidence package. The expectation of new applicants is to confirm site readiness through the site evidence package either at submission or when prompted by Health Canada through the new review process. For Existing Applicants Health Canada has implemented a “preliminary/high level review” of applications following the screening … [Read more...] about Health Canada Licence Regulation Updates - May 14, 2019

SELF INSPECTIONS – Keeping the Business Compliant by Implementing Best Practices

May 2, 2019

Cannabis businesses are subject to many different inspections from regulatory bodies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Health Canada. Of all the inspections a Licence Holder (LH) will face, Health Canada inspections are critical to the business in terms of being permitted to produce and sell cannabis products as well as to assess and monitor compliance with the Cannabis Act & Regulations. Interacting with these regulatory bodies is routine, however keeping your business compliant and ready for inspections can be overwhelming. Therefore, the best approach is to conduct self inspections/internal audits on a regular basis to ensure safety, compliance and quality standards are in place, and maintained. Best … [Read more...] about SELF INSPECTIONS – Keeping the Business Compliant by Implementing Best Practices

Cannabis Extract and Processing: Essential Considerations

April 17, 2019

The production of cannabis materials outside of dried cannabis flowers was a significant development in the Canadian market and has heralded the modernization of cannabis products in Canada and internationally. As industry leaders gear up for upcoming edible and concentrate products, all applicants and start-up producers must determine their scope of products, services and opportunities. Consider the properties of different input materials and their possible applications, including: Isolates: >99% pure target cannabinoid Distillates: up to 95% pure target cannabinoid Resins: 80% of cannabinoids in a mixture based on the original plant material Products can range from pharmaceutical grade additions to a medical regimen, a potent health and wellness product, or desirable … [Read more...] about Cannabis Extract and Processing: Essential Considerations

The Illicit Cannabis Market vs. the Legal Cannabis Market – What We Can Learn

April 16, 2019

It is well-known that the regulated cannabis industry directly competes with a well-established illicit market, and eliminating the latter is central to Health Canada’s cannabis objectives. Unfortunately, since legalization, provincial distributors of recreational cannabis report a deficiency of cannabis from Health Canada licenced sources that genuinely limits the regulated market. In November, the government of Alberta instituted a surprise freeze on issuance of new cannabis store licences, and other provincial governments have limited the operating hours of their own stores due to lack of supply. At the same time, reports trickle from the unregulated market that availability of illicit cannabis is unaffected by new competition from the legal market. The unregulated market has an … [Read more...] about The Illicit Cannabis Market vs. the Legal Cannabis Market – What We Can Learn

The Ontario Budget and the Future of Ontario Cannabis Retail

April 12, 2019

On Thursday, April 11th, 2019, Ontario Minister of Finance Vic Fedeli presented the 2019/20 provincial budget where it offered insights into the future of Ontario cannabis retail. The budget is quick to point the finger at the federal government, stating that the federal government had “[chose] to throw open the doors to cannabis legalization without first taking into account the reliability and sustainability of the national cannabis supply.” Ontario has offset the blame for the limited amount of retail stores onto the Federal government, with the justification that the cap on retail stores was necessary to address the supply shortage issue. Although this caused much frustration in regions where access to a retail outlet would be few and far between, the model was justified when … [Read more...] about The Ontario Budget and the Future of Ontario Cannabis Retail

APPLICATION OF GMP IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY

March 29, 2019

ABSTRACT Many European Union (EU) countries have legalized or decriminalized the medical use of cannabis to some degree. The advent of broad acceptance of medical cannabis as public opinion shifts in the EU is driving the need for the cannabis industry to implement strict regulatory controls on the production of cannabis products. There is therefore a shift to implementation of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) in the cannabis space, most notably in Canada, where medical cannabis production has been legal since 2001 but regulated to a lesser extent than the GMP standard. Due to the lack of regulatory harmonization in the US, this shift to GMP standards for production is expected to impact the US market when medical cannabis laws become regulated federally. The interfaces of medical … [Read more...] about APPLICATION OF GMP IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY
