Cannabis Industry Facing Shortage of Staff

October 16, 2018 Leave a Comment

Cannabis has gained significant attention in the media since Trudeau announced a path to legalization. Neighbours trade stock tip, businesses are being bought and sold, and it seems every month a new country announces plans for legalizing cannabis. But there’s a serious challenge emerging in the industry that isn’t being talked about. The cannabis challenge is about supply and demand, but not about the actual product. It’s about people – the talented and trained individuals who are in short supply, but who are desperately needed by emerging cannabis companies. It’s a challenge with parallels in many booming sectors; for example, the artificial intelligence industry, which, similar to cannabis, is growing extremely fast. The challenge for startup AI businesses isn’t about sourcing … [Read more...] about Cannabis Industry Facing Shortage of Staff

Health Canada - Cost Recovery Fees

October 15, 2018 Leave a Comment

As many of our clients and readers are aware, Health Canada has started the conversation around charging fees for reviewing applications for cannabis facilities. The following is a snapshot summary of what’s happening. A 30-day public consultation was held by Health Canada through online, written submissions and form letters to get public input on an approach to cost recovery to regulate cannabis. For our readers who are not familiar with the term “cost recovery”, it means that the government body regulating cannabis activities would attempt to recover a certain percent of its operating expenses via charged fees to stakeholders. In this case, the government body is Health Canada. Licensed cannabis producers will have to pay fees beginning on Oct 17. Health Canada announced on October … [Read more...] about Health Canada - Cost Recovery Fees

UK Cannabis Legalization

September 13, 2018 1 Comment

In the last few months an exciting piece of news has been around the United Kingdom taking steps towards legalizing medical cannabis. Here’s a short boil-down of what’s happening. In the summer, a 12-year-old boy named Billy Caldwell was prevented from obtaining his medical cannabis for his epilepsy. The political event sparked tremendous debate in the UK, and which quickly pushed the government into the conversation. Shortly thereafter, the UK announced that it would commit to revisiting the status of medical cannabis available to people in the UK. In the process of rescheduling medical cannabis (called Cannabis-Derived Medicinal Products, or CDMP’s), on August 15/18 the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) working group met with the representatives of the Home Office, the … [Read more...] about UK Cannabis Legalization

The Cannabis Regulations

July 2, 2018 Leave a Comment

On June 27, Health Canada provided information on the regulations that will support the newly passed Cannabis Act, as was expected. The four sets of new regulations will be published in Canada Gazette II on July 11, 2018. Trudeau’s government has also announced that the new regulations will come into force on October 17, 2018 – later than expected, but which gives some of the Provinces more time to prepare. As expected, cannabis will no longer be scheduled as a “narcotic” under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA). In doing so, the CDSA is no longer the empowering Act governing the production and sale of cannabis in Canada; previously, the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) were the governing regulations and were empowered by other Acts, including the … [Read more...] about The Cannabis Regulations

HACCP for Cannabis Edibles

June 21, 2018 1 Comment

By Shirley Toms, Senior Quality & Regulatory Consultant Cannabis Compliance Inc. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Application in Cannabis Edibles Legalization of recreational cannabis in 2018 is now a reality. We’ve been experiencing the industry’s rush to become licenced for cannabis production and expect that pressure to continue into 2019. With the expected approval of edibles in 2019, the next cannabis rush will be for development of edible and drinkable cannabis products where preparing for quality controls will be imperative to the security of the cannabis edibles industry. From the medical perspective, the most vulnerable parts of our populations are already using cannabis as medicine, many of them with health conditions that have weakened their immune … [Read more...] about HACCP for Cannabis Edibles

Quality Agreements in Cannabis

June 14, 2018 Leave a Comment

By Karina Lahnakoski, Vice-President Quality Regulatory Cannabis Compliance Inc. As the complexities of the cannabis industry and supply chain are changing at light speed, it is important to step back and ensure that your supply chain is complying to the regulations. That means having in place quality agreements with your vendors and your customers to align expectations. This document is already commonplace in pharmaceuticals, primarily because pharma companies will get cited by the regulatory agency if operating without them. It is so instrumental to the operation of the drug supply chain that FDA had published a Guidance document just on Quality Agreements and they are strictly enforced. This standard is going to make waves in the cannabis space. A Quality Agreement delineates … [Read more...] about Quality Agreements in Cannabis
