Canada is poised to become the only G7 country in the world
to legalize lucrative recreational cannabis on a federal level.
Under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s leadership and campaign promises, Canada has officially announced its intentions to create a new regulatory framework in 2017-2018 allowing for the cultivation and sale of cannabis for recreational purposes.
The Task Force Report was released in December 2016, and at present the federal government is planning this new framework. While there is no announcement regarding timeframes, the industry expects draft regulations to be released around April 2017. Once draft regulations are published in Canada Gazette Part I, there is a 30 to 75 day comment period from Canadians. After this, the regulations are published in Part II, receive royal assent, and then become official as they are published in Part III in cooperation with the Department of Justice. This means that the government may be accepting applications as early as September 2017.
Proposed Framework
The Government of Canada issued a 112 page report of recommendations on how recreational cannabis should be legalized. From edibles, retail outlets, diversity of cultivators and derivatives, it’s the most comprehensive roadmap for cannabis in the world.
Medical vs. Recreational
The proposal is to allow medical cannabis to continue under the ACMP Regulations, while recreational cannabis would run in parallel.
Dispensaries and Retail
Currently, all retail dispensaries are illegal and are risky business ventures. However, with the advent of new regulations in 2017, we can provide strategic planning so you will be ready.
Farming Cannabis Outdoors
The Task Force Report proposes to allow outdoor cultivation, which the agricultural sector will love. We are the first to provide insight and direction in this lucrative new business model.
